Not-to-Miss Books
This site is focussed on the way we engage with others while we are getting things done. While the way we make requests and promises play a big role in the results we get, so does how we work day-to-day. I’ve selected the following books to supplement Let’s Play Catch!
| Pat Lencioni is one of the great thinkers of our time on leadership and working together. Death by Meeting is the fourth in a series of leadership parables. Pat writes an engaging story. He’ll keep you engaged each moment connecting with his protagonist. He leaves the story with clear principles and actions for success. If you care about how effective your meetings are, then you owe it to yourself to read Death by Meeting. Further, if you care about your team, then read the whole series. | |
| Getting BIG things done with others depends on the quality of relationship we have with them. Kerry Patterson and company have authored two indespensble books on mastering the skills of conversation to build solid relationships. Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when the Stakes Are High presents the basic frameworks, dispositions, and skills for venturing into those ‘delicate’ but necessary conversations that will continue to build our relationships. The books was a NY Times best seller and is on many recommended reading lists. The follow-on book Crucial Confrontations: Never Walk Away from another Conflict Again! picks up where the first book left off. Relationships inevitably approach breakdown. This book will prepare you for those situations that need productive confrontation. Whether you want to get BIG things done with others or just have great relationships get these boooks. | |
| Matt Budd’s book is one of my favorites on being effective in action. Dr. Budd wrote this book to show how our physical and mental health is shaped by the persistent conversations that we have with oourself and others. He uses a series of stories of his patients to introduce various aspects of what is loosely called the language-action perspective. I haven’t found a more readable and comprehendable book on the topic. LAP is the theory behind the Lets Play Catch! I was engrossed by his stories and the clear explanations he gave for the behaviors. Get this book if your are serious about the effectiveness of your team. Better yet, get this book if you care about your own health. | |
